In 2005 Seth Gonzales’ parents and sister were murdered in their family home in Lane Cove, Sydney. Seth returned home for the day to find their bodies and a racist message spray painted on an internal wall.
When other evidence in the case pointed the finger at Seth as the offender, FDS was asked to undertake a handwriting comparison of the message with notes written by Seth. We found similarities between the writings and no significant differences. Since the examination was limited by the message only containing a small amount of handwriting and was written with an unusual writing implement (spray can) on a vertical surface, we were very guarded in our opinion on whether or not Seth wrote the message.
Nonetheless, the evidence was presented to the jury and in conjunction with other evidence against him, Seth was convicted of the murders.
