Former Director of the Document Examination Sections of the Commonwealth Police, Australian Federal Police and the Australian Department of Immigration & Ethnic Affairs. Consulted regularly by State and Federal government departments and instrumentalities in Australia as well as numerous legal firms, banks, financial and auditing institutions both in Australia and overseas. Extensive court experience throughout Australia and overseas spanning a period in excess of thirty years. Occasional lecturer on document examination at the University of Sydney, Centre for Continuing Education; Australian National University Legal Workshop; Charles Sturt University, NSW Police Academy Campus. Regularly attends and participates in national and international meetings in this area of forensic science.

Authored the chapter on Document Examination in the Law Book Company’s loose leaf publication “Expert Evidence” published in 1993; author of the article “Document Examination” in the publication Expert Evidence in Family Law published in 1999. Co-author of the article “Document Analysis – Handwriting” in the Encyclopedia of Forensic Science (Academic Press, 2000). Regularly co-presents courses on the applications of forensic document examination to investigators and lawyers.

Awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in 1982 for services in the field of forensic document examination whilst a member of the Australian Federal Police. Awarded the National Medal in 1984 in respect of police service. Holds the degree of Bachelor of Laws and a Diploma in Document Examination from the Forensic Science Society of the United Kingdom.

Foundation member of the Australasian Society of Forensic Document Examiners. Former President and Secretary of that Society. Corresponding Member of the American Society of Questioned Document Examiners. Member and Registered Forensic Practitioner of the Australian and New Zealand Forensic Science Society and Member of the Forensic Science Society of the United Kingdom.

Holds the degrees of Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in Chemistry, University of Sheffield and is a Member of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute; Member and Committee Member of the Australasian Society of Forensic Document Examiners; Corresponding Member of the American Society of Questioned Document Examiners; Member and Registered Forensic Practitioner of the Australian and New Zealand Forensic Science Society; Member of the Forensic Science Society of the United Kingdom. Former document examiner with the London Metropolitan Police Forensic Science Laboratory. Whilst there, Dr Strach recognised the potential of the original ESDA research and was a key figure in ensuring on-going research which resulted in the development of the ESDA for document examination.

Has conducted scientific research on various aspects of document examination and has attended and presented scientific papers at meetings both in Australia and overseas on forensic science and document examination. The author or co-author of many scientific papers, several of which pertain to document examination. Co-author of the article “Document Analysis – Handwriting” in the Encyclopedia of Forensic Science (Academic Press, 2000).

Employed by Forensic Document Services since September 1990. Regularly co-presents courses on the applications of forensic document examination to investigators and lawyers.

Michelle Novotny
Senior Forensic Document and Handwriting Examiner

Holds the degree of Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Applied Chemistry and Forensic Science from the University of Technology Sydney, completed in November 1997 and graduated in May 1998.

Has conducted scientific research in the field of document examination and has written an honours thesis entitled “The Application of a Sequence of Standard Techniques for the Differentiation of Ballpoint Pen Inks available in Australia”, which was published in Forensic Science International in May 1999.

Has also undertaken research in various aspects of forensic document examination.

Member and Committee Member of the Australasian Society of Forensic Document Examiners. Member of the Australian and New Zealand Forensic Science Society and of the Forensis Science Society of the United Kingdom.

Commenced employment with Forensic Document Services in October 1997. Accepted as an expert by the New South Wales District Court, Supreme Court and Federal Court.

Candice Moussa

Holds the degree of Bachelor of Science (Anatomy and Histology) from the University of Sydney and a Bachelor of Applied Science (Forensic Investigation) from the Canberra Institute of Technology, completed in 2002 and 2005 respectively.

As part of the applied science degree has conducted scientific research in the area of document examination. This research related to the occurrence of letter formations in the handwriting of a given population of writers.

Commenced employment and training in the area of handwriting and document examination with Forensic Document Services in December 2005.

Member of The Australian and New Zealand Forensic Science Society.
