Fingerprint examinations are not confined to criminal matters: their application in civil matters is becoming increasingly relevant. For example, Mr X denies that the signature in his name on a guarantee was written by him. He also asserts that he has never seen the document. A forensic examination of the questioned signature with known specimen signatures attributed to Mr X revealed evidence that the questioned signature was written by Mr X. Subsequent chemical treatment using 1,2-Indanedione Zinc developed fingerprints on the guarantee.
A comparison with known fingerprints of Mr X resulted in an identification of his fingerprints on the document. Mr X's memory had been significantly refreshed.
